Explosions in the Sky – End
Release Date: September 8, 2023
“It never fails to amaze me the power of music when love is at its core. It is the reason we get out of bed every morning. To hope that we can continue to show that beauty is still around and in all of us. Thank you for doing what you do and helping us through this life.”
—Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins), in a message sent to Explosions in the Sky after hearing End, the band’s first album in seven years.
A Profound Exploration of Endings and Beginnings
End, the enigmatic seventh album by Explosions in the Sky, emerged from a meditation on darkness yet transformed into a loud, dramatic, and wild reflection on life and death.
“Our starting point was the concept of an ending—whether death, the conclusion of a friendship, or the dissolution of a relationship. Each song originates from a story or idea that we expanded upon, crafting its own unique world. Perhaps it’s in our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was open to broader interpretation—the end of something can signify a stop, but it can also mark a new beginning,” the band explains.
Blending the quiet restraint and raw emotion of their early releases with the sonic experimentation and intricate textures of their later works, End is arguably the grandest Explosions in the Sky album to date. The band’s extensive film and television scoring experience, paired with influences spanning classical, soul, and experimental ambient music, has shaped a record that bridges intensity and introspection.
The album’s title continues a thematic arc that began with the innocence of their debut (How Strange, Innocence), moved through the idealism and romanticism of their second and third albums (Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever and The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place), followed by introspection (All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone and Take Care, Take Care, Take Care), and culminating in the expansive scope of The Wilderness.
The End Tour & Upcoming Projects
In 2023, Explosions in the Sky embarked on The End Tour, bringing their legendary live experience to 26 cities across the globe, with additional dates expected to be announced soon. The band is also currently scoring a new, undisclosed television series set to premiere in 2024.
Despite its title, End is not the band’s final album—it is simply the next chapter in their ongoing sonic journey.
About Explosions in the Sky
Explosions in the Sky is an iconic instrumental rock band from Texas, revered for their emotionally charged, cinematic sound and incendiary live performances. What began in DIY spaces and as an opening act for Fugazi has since led to sold-out headline shows at Radio City Music Hall, Royal Albert Hall, the Greek Theatre, and the Sydney Opera House.
With the same four members for over 24 years, the band has achieved remarkable commercial success in an unconventional corner of the music world. They have sold more than 1.3 million copies across six studio albums and composed scores for five major motion pictures. Their music has become synonymous with modern sports films, documentaries, and television, thanks in part to their groundbreaking Friday Night Lights score. Over the years, they have shared the stage with artists as diverse as Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, The Flaming Lips, and Death Cab for Cutie, all while maintaining a sound entirely their own.
