In 2002, CAKE performed an unforgettable concert in St Pete at Jannus Landing, a popular outdoor venue that has hosted many legendary shows over the years. The band’s unique blend of rock, funk, and country music was on full display that night, as they delivered a high-energy performance that left the crowd begging for more.
Who Is CAKE?
CAKE was formed in Sacramento, California in 1991, and quickly gained a reputation for their unique blend of rock, funk, and country music. The band’s distinctive sound was characterized by John McCrea’s distinctive deadpan vocals, Vince DiFiore’s trumpet and keyboard contributions, and the use of spoken-word samples and unconventional instruments like the vibraslap.
The band’s popularity grew steadily throughout the 1990s, thanks in part to hit songs like “The Distance” and “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” as well as their acclaimed live shows. By the time they arrived at Jannus Landing in 2002, CAKE was at the peak of their popularity, and fans were eager to see them perform live.
Sweet And Hot
The concert in St Pete was a highlight of CAKE’s tour, and fans came from far and wide to see the band play live. Many attendees had never been to Jannus Landing before, but they quickly fell in love with the venue’s outdoor setting and festive atmosphere.
The show took place on a warm summer evening in July, with a crowd of thousands gathered in the outdoor venue. The opening act, a local band called The Beauvilles, warmed up the crowd with a high-energy set of their own, and by the time CAKE took the stage, the atmosphere was electric.
Crowd Pleasers
Highlights of the set included “Frank Sinatra,” a fan favorite that had the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs, as well as “Never There,” a slower, more contemplative tune that showcased McCrea’s lyrical prowess.
The band closed out their set with “Sheep Go to Heaven,” another beloved fan favorite that had the crowd jumping and dancing along. As the band left the stage, the audience erupted into cheers and applause, demanding an encore.
True to form, CAKE returned for a two-song encore, playing “Mexico” and “The Distance” to the delight of the crowd. As the final notes of “The Distance” ran
g out, the band took a final bow and left the stage, bringing an end to an unforgettable night of music.
What A Night
In the end, the concert in St. Pete was a night to remember, a testament to the enduring popularity of CAKE and the power of live music to bring people together. For those who were lucky enough to be there, it was a memory that they will treasure for the rest of their lives.
